The hustle and bustle of back-to-school arrives early in Chula Vista as children and youths returned to class on July 22.
East Chula Vista is home to many families with school-age children and many teachers. Jose and Heatherlyn Lopez are two teachers who have called Eastlake Shores home for the past four years. Prior to that the Lopezes lived in southwest and downtown Chula Vista. Jose grew up in Chula Vista; both he and Heatherlyn graduated from Bonita Vista High.
Heatherlyn and Jose have been involved in the teaching profession for years. For the last 10 years Jose has taught at San Ysidro High School. The school’s theater program is thriving under his leadership, and the productions are evidence of engaged, talented and passionate students.
Heatherlyn is currently a substitute teacher with the Sweetwater Union High School District and South Bay Union School District. She has also been a preschool teacher and a teacher at a private elementary school. And although both have spent years as educators, their most important teaching role is that of mom and dad to their 9-year-old daughter Jaylyn.
The Lopez family loves living in Chula Vista and everything the entire city has to offer. They have enjoyed a summer vacation full of fun family travel, a family reunion, and attending Comic Con as X-Men and Dr. Who characters.
Some favorite local family activities include fishing in Otay Lakes and kayaking in the marina. They are looking forward to their annual tradition of attending Chula Vista’s Lemon Festival Aug. 2 on historic Third Avenue in downtown Chula Vista.
“Chula Vista is a beautiful family- and pet-friendly community. It holds the best of new and established communities, culture, food, water (marina, Otay Lake, Eastlake Lake). We love driving by the breathtaking Eastlake lake every day, especially at sunset,” said Healtherlyn Lopez.
